    Getting into CMP shooting

Forgive the ignorance here, but I'm completely new to this type of shooting...

I think I'd like to try some CMP events at Camp Perry, I'm just not sure where to start. I have my Appleseed Rifleman patch, so I'm OK on the fundamentals of marksmanship. I have a few M96 Mausers that I love to shoot, and I think it would be fun to try them at a match. I'm OK with getting my arse handed to me by better shooters, I just want to know what level of proficiency is needed before signing up, so I'm not just wasting time and ammo. I've watched a few matches and I think I understand the equipment needed and basic match format. Should I try to go for an open range session? Try to find a place where I can practice beyond 200 yds (my personal longest...not many options in SE Michigan)? Or should I just sign up for a Vintage Sniper event and learn on the fly?

    Appreciate the help.

    Hi Tobal:

I compete in two CMP events, Bullseye pistol competition (precision pistol) and 3 position (or 4 position) smallbore rifle. Also re-entering the air pistol competitions as well

I am located in Pinckney and we are just starting up our winter indoor bullseye leagues. I shoot three or four matches a week at various ranges within a hour of Pinckney (Adrian, Jackson, Brighton, Ann Arbor, and Lansing). Let me know if you are on this side of Detroit and I can get you started in one of the leagues.

If you are interested in bullseye pistol, there is a active winter indoor league around Detroit (SEMPA-SouthEast Michigan Pistol Association). My Howell team shoots in Sempa although it is not listed on their website. the Sempa teams we shoot against are listed on the website and I am sure you can find a team near you and make the appropriate inquiries.

In addition to Sempa, there is a active bullseye league in Lansing and also a League up around the Flint-Saginaw-Bay City-Midland area. I shoot in the Lansing League. I have not shot with the Saginaw league but I shoot with a number of people that participate up there as well. They are great people and will bend over backwards for a newby.

As for position smallbore rifle shooting, I have not pursued it very much since I relocated to Pinckney from Lansing a couple years ago. If you are interested in the Lansing Small bore league I can set you up there.

Shoot me a PM or email at crankythunder@yahoo.com if you are interested. Anybody else who is interested in indoor winter bullseye competitions is free to contact me as well.

    Regards,
    Crankster

    500 and 600 yard ranges

    Hi Tobal, Cranky here again

I am a member at the Howell Gun Club and the Washtenaw Sportsman Club in Ann Arbor.

Howell Gun Club is just opening up a 500 yard range and the Washtenaw Sportsmans Club has a 600 yard range. You will have to be a member to use the facilities when they are not holding a public event and you will have to qualify to be able to use the long range rifle ranges. I have not gotten around to qualifying at either club's long rifle range, been too busy with bullseye pistol.

    Regards,
    Crankster

    Hi Tobal:

I think that you are on the right track if competition at Camp Perry is your goal. I have shot at Camp Perry in Bullseye Pistol, Smallbore Rifle, and air pistol and to compete for the first time at Perry it is best to team up with friends and associates that have competed in large matches before. It is basically a clustermess with all the people signing in with confusing directions and instructions with a lot of hurry up and wait, and standing in line. Commercial Row at Camp Perry at the national matches is awesome although it is not what it used to be, but, it is recovering from the covid fiasco.

    Regards,
    Crankster

lots of CMP sponsored matches. are you talking Air Pistol? Air Rifle? Small bore? Handgun? Rifle?

there are also the games matches (Garand, Springfield, Modern Military, Carbine, .22 Sporter)

narrow it down for us and we can better answer your question

Like I said, I really like my Swedish Mausers, so maybe that would be a good place to start. I'd also like a reason to put a match grade AR together, so maybe modern military rifle. Mostly though, I'm curious about what kind of rifle proficiency I need. My first thought is that I'd be wasting my time if I've never tried shooting out to 600 yards with anything, so I should probably start there. Might need to look into Howell Gun Club.

Appreciate all the info so far.

The Mauser will be fine for CMP games matches. You can find matches if this type near you in CMP competition tracker (http://ct.thecmp.org).

You will need a sling on the rifle and you will need a few stripper clips. Standard 30 shot course of fire will be 5 slow fire sighters + 10 slow fire prone shots (single load). Second stage is 10 rounds rapid fire prone (80 second time limit) with a reload. Last stage is 10 shots slow fire standing (single load).

These matches are all fired at 100 or 200 yards. SR1 target for 100 yd matches, SR for 200 yd.

If you wish to move to an AR realize a legal MM AR won’t by and large be competitive in traditional high power matches. You can fire your National Match AR in a games match in the unlimited modern military category. The cut score for a trinket is higher but in the end unless it is at Perry or maybe a state championship you are only competing with yourself.

Also realize there are a lot of matches in Michigan to shoot a NM AR at throughout the year. Here is the link to the 2023 calendar

    https://drive.google.com/file/d/1hzQ...w?usp=drivesdk

Show up to one of my Monroe matches and I am more than happy to help you out.

If you want to shoot High Power, there is a 200yd match this weekend in Macomb County at Detroit Sportsmens Congress. You should be able to shoot your Mauser, but you might want to call them to make sure. Here is the match program:

    If you go, good luck!
