I have "way more toys" than my wife thinks I need, but the 1911's are the last ones I'd give up!!!

I tend to disagree. The 1911 s are not outdated by any engineering measure. And the reasons given by Mr Benson to debunk the fact that it is outdated are mre emotional than practical technical facts why the 1911 is NOT outdated.

The design is still applicapble to modern days handguns. Most reliability problems associated with 1911 are due to reloaded ammo, and poor maintainance. worn springs, worn extractors etc..
The proof that the 1911 is not outdated is the shear volume of 2011 popping up these days Staccato, fusion, platybus, ad many many more. Eventhough they call it 2011, but the basic operation is the same as 1911.

couple tips for enhancing the perofrmance of any 1911
    1) Use good ammo. more than 70% of failures I have seen in IDPA matches are due to reloaded ammo. 45 ACP shooters keep using the cases in their reloading inventory until failure of the case.. Other reloaders do not use a seperate crimp die. bad ammo then expect hickups

    2) original recoil springs are designed to be replaced at 1000 rds.. Well, use a flat spring by wilson that is +1 lb heavier and your spring will last 5000 rds just like newer or modern guns

    3) pay attention to internal extractors and keep them properly tuned every 2500 rds. Otherwise buy a 1911 with an external extractor like Sig or SW and forget about it.

    4) do not use crappy magazines - use good designed magazines (Wilson, trp research etc.)

The 1911 trigger is still The king of the hill...

As for safeties, well Mr. Benson was wrong, the 1911 has much more safeties than needed, and Kimber and wilson combat have newer variations with out the grip safety and the thumb safety is more than enough.

Most 1911 operation failures are avoidable but people mistakenly gave it a bad reputation for reliability. I love 1911s, I do not consider them outdated, And i do not have to be emotional about defending them from being outdadted. I use engineering facts to proove they are fine guns.

Now that said, here comes the emotional part. Every American gun owner should own at least of variation of the 1911 (if they can afford adding one to their collection) because it is absolutely the American icon of semi auto handguns.

    Yep.
Hence the 2011. Which I will garner is gaining faster traction than any single poly gun out there. Everyone from Springfield to Tisas is making a DS 1911.
So, outdated? Sure. But so is the 1969 GTO. But I'd burn 3 Teslas in front of Elon to own a single Judge. So, you know, to each his own.

All that’s old is new again. Para Ordnance had double stack 1911s decades ago. Surprised that they didn’t take off more than they did at the time.

Barely. Only in certain arbitrary ways.

    Muskets are outdated
