    Suppressor purchase

I would like to purchase a suppressor for my hunting rifle and I am in need of some guidance. Do I need to create a trust to own the suppressor?
What steps do I need to own a suppressor in Michigan?
Thanks in advance for your guidance .

Trust would be your best option as it makes it easier to transfer it.

However, I wouldn't recommend silencer shop as they're expensive for what you get and it has multiple limitations.

I would recommend either contacting shyster or finding a FFL with a Cerberus kiosk as those trusts are a little better built out than silencer shop. Plus you're actually a customer of that FFL and they can help you more down the road.

I have a trust, but don't use it anymore.
I used Shyster (member of this forum) to set up my trust, but noticed longer wait times plus some additional paperwork when I wanted to add additional NFA items, so now just do an individual purchase. But, if you have family that wants to use your silencer at any point, you'll want a trust.
So in short, you don't need a trust, but in some instances it's the best route to go.

Thanks for the info. I have a trust for my family already. I was thinking I can buy it individually and then add it to my trust later. Not sure if that works. I will look into it.
    Thanks again

I purchased a can in September 2024 and another January 2025, both with a trust.

Submitted September 15, approved October 4

Submitted January 4, approved January 10

I think a trust is absolutely worth the "longer" wait times. Yes, individuals sometimes are approved in hours or days now, but everything is screaming fast compared to any other time in the past

If you buy as an individual then transfer to the trust, you will pay the tax stamp twice. I guess it depends how impatient you are and how much money you have, but that doesn't make much sense to me. YMMV

Good catch. I totally missed that he was talking about a "normal" trust.

And remember that buying as an individual and then transferring to a trust later on will be another form 4 and $200 tax.
Silencer Central does great stuff for mailing right to your door, but they WILL push you to buy their house line of suppressors and they don't have as big of an operation as SilencerShop
SilencerShop makes it very easy if you have a local shop that works with them, but you pay for the convenience. The bright side is that sometimes they have good sales and I haven't seen as many good deals in Silencer Central.
Both will do 1-shot trusts (trust for just the 1 item) that you can modify later on as you please.

Trusts make it a lot easier to loan or leave things with other people, but can take a little longer to process. A couple weeks now instead of a day or two.

For those using a Trust, how much of a PITA was 41F to you when you buy additional NFA items for the trust? It's the reason I stopped using a Trust and went to Individual. The turnaround time being faster for the Individual was a just a bonus.
