Going about buying a handgun from a private seller

Hey all, I'm new to this forum and trying to go about buying a handgun for home protection from a private seller on the MGO marketplace. I'm turning 19 and know in michigan I will need to aquire a pistol purchase permit from my local police station, but I was unsure if there was anything else I should know to go about the process correctly, a lot of what I've read is vague apart from the purchase limit so thought I would ask here. Any advice is greatly appreciated

Welcome to MGO! I'm sure others will chime in, but your purchase permit is all you should need. The seller is responsible for submitting the sales record to their local LEO. As a suggestion, if you are new to firearms, please consider training before using your new pistol for home protection. Another suggestion is to use the resources found here on MGO to learn more about your intended purchase. If you have time, volunteer for various MGO activites. The upcoming Outdoorama will be a great start - you'll meet several members, pick their brains and leave with some great advice. And maybe with some beef jerky.

Double check your info on the LTP at the PD before you leave. I had one where the DOB had transposed digits, the guy clearly wasn't 90+ years old.
Same for the firearm serial number on your copy of the triplicate form.
Aside from that, for you it is basically a "here's my LTP, ID and $$" followed by "here's your pistol and your copy of the LTP".

Also, make sure to keep at least a copy of your LTP that the seller handed you with the pistol for the next 30 days. I usually recommend putting one in the factory case/box and keeping one in your wallet if you're going to be hauling it around during the first 30 days.

    MCL 28.422(6)
"...The licensee may carry, use, possess, and transport the pistol for 30 days beginning on the date of purchase or acquisition only while the licensee is in possession of a copy of the license. However, the licensee is not required to have the license in the licensee's possession while carrying, using, possessing, or transporting the pistol after this period."
Lastly, it would be in your best interest to become intimately familiar with pistol transport 'rules' as found in MCL 750.231a(d-e). It isn't complicated or very long to read.

...as for the "purchase limit", I think you meant to type 'permit' instead of limit. But if not, there are no black-letter firearm purchase limits. (# per year/month/week/etc)

If it is a License to Purchase (LTP), the seller must submit the completed copy to the ISSUING AGENCY which may or may not be their local LEO.

If the buyer has a Concealed Pistol License (CPL), then a RI-060 is used instead of a LTP and THAT can be submitted to the seller's local LEO.

Thank you for that clarification. As the OP indicated, Michigan gun laws are vague, convoluted, not easy to understand, confusing - and, I might add, not necessary.
